Permit can be caught in all four of our fishing locations, but some areas offer better and more consistent opportunities than others. Isla Blanca and Ascension Bay are our two primary permit fisheries, while permit are encountered less frequently in Cozumel and are rare in Cancun Lagoon.

Isla Blanca

Permit Fishing Gear & Tackle

Permit are powerful saltwater fish, and the tackle needs to handle both the fish and the conditions you may encounter on the flats. A 9-weight, fast-action fly rod is an excellent all-around choice for permit, with an 8-weight suitable in calmer conditions and a 10-weight useful when wind or larger flies make additional power helpful.

A large-arbor saltwater reel with a smooth, reliable sealed drag is important for handling a permit's powerful runs. We recommend plenty of backing capacity, along with a tropical weight-forward floating fly line designed to perform in warm saltwater conditions.

For leaders, a 9- to 12-foot tapered leader provides a good balance between presentation and the ability to turn over larger permit flies. Depending on the conditions and fly being used, 12- to 16-pound fluorocarbon tippet is a practical range for permit fishing.
