Cancun Lagoon Fly Fishing

Cancun offers excellent backcountry fly fishing just minutes from the Hotel Zone, with a large system of shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, channels and lagoons providing habitat for tarpon, snook and other saltwater species.

Tarpon and snook are the primary targets and can be found throughout the year, with particularly good opportunities during the spring and summer months. Bonefish are occasionally encountered, and permit can also appear in the fishery, although they are much less common than in Isla Blanca or Ascension Bay.

The protected waters of Cancun Lagoon provide a very different experience from offshore fishing, with much of the day spent working shallow water, mangrove edges and backcountry areas in search of fish.

Fishing The Cancun Nichupte Lagoon

Cancun Lagoon offers a productive backcountry fishery made up of shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, channels and protected lagoon waters. These areas provide excellent habitat for tarpon and snook and also offer occasional opportunities for bonefish and permit.

Much of the fishing involves working shallow water and mangrove edges, with guides looking for cruising, feeding or holding fish and positioning anglers for the best possible presentation. The fishing area and approach can change throughout the day depending on tides, wind, water clarity and the species being targeted.

Because tarpon and snook are available throughout the year, Cancun Lagoon is a strong option for anglers looking for convenient access to backcountry fly fishing while staying in Cancun.

Cancun Lagoon Target Species

Cancun Lagoon is primarily a tarpon and snook fishery, with both species providing opportunities throughout the year. Bonefish are occasionally encountered, while permit are much less common than in Isla Blanca or Ascension Bay. The variety of species gives anglers the chance to encounter different fish while exploring the lagoon's flats, channels and mangrove-lined waters.
