Isla Blanca Fly Fishing

Isla Blanca is one of the Riviera Maya's premier backcountry fly fishing destinations, located just north of Cancun. The area offers a mix of shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, channels and lagoons that provide opportunities to target a variety of saltwater species.

Tarpon and snook are available throughout the year, while permit and bonefish provide additional opportunities, particularly during the spring and summer months. The variety of water and species makes Isla Blanca a great choice for anglers looking for an exciting day of sight fishing close to Cancun.

Fishing Isla Blanca

Isla Blanca offers a unique mix of shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, channels and lagoons just north of Cancun. The variety of water allows anglers to move between different types of habitat throughout the day, depending on the tide, wind, water clarity and where the fish are holding.

Much of the fishing is sight fishing in relatively shallow water. Your guide will look for cruising, feeding or moving fish and help position you for a good presentation. The combination of flats and backcountry water also means there are opportunities to target different species during the same trip.

Isla Blanca Target Species

Isla Blanca offers opportunities to target tarpon, snook, permit and bonefish. Tarpon and snook are available throughout the year, while permit and bonefish provide additional opportunities, particularly during the spring and summer months. Each species offers a different style of fishing, from sight fishing shallow flats to working mangrove shorelines and backcountry waters.

Isla Blanca Fishing Seasons

Isla Blanca offers fishing opportunities throughout the year, with tarpon and snook available year-round in good numbers. Permit can also be encountered throughout the year, with April through October being the primary season. Bonefish are more commonly encountered during the spring and summer months. See our Riviera Maya fishing seasons for a broader look at seasonal fishing opportunities throughout the region.

As with other flats fisheries, tides, wind, water clarity and daily conditions can influence where fish are found and how actively they feed. Your guide will adjust the fishing area and approach based on the conditions and the species you're hoping to target.

What to Expect on an Isla Blanca Fly Fishing Trip

An Isla Blanca fishing trip begins with an early morning meeting in Cancun before heading north to fish the flats and backcountry waters of Isla Blanca. Once on the water, your guide will choose where to fish based on the tide, wind, water conditions and the species you're hoping to target.

Fishing can take place along shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, channels and lagoons, giving anglers the opportunity to experience several different types of water during the same trip. Much of the fishing involves searching for fish and making accurate presentations when opportunities develop.

Trips can be fished with fly tackle, light spinning tackle, or a combination of both, depending on your experience and how you prefer to fish. Before your trip, see our what to bring on a Riviera Maya fishing trip guide for recommended clothing, gear and other items to help you prepare.
